What stays on your phone
- Your audio. The microphone is used only while you speak. Speech recognition runs on your phone. Short recordings of your own voice (to replay your lines in feedback, "Say that line again" takes and Clarity takes) stay on your phone for the time you choose in Settings › Privacy › Keep my recordings: Don't keep, 1 day, 7 days or 30 days. Takes you choose to keep stay until you delete them. Audio is never sent.
- Your rehearsals. Transcripts, feedback, moments, cue cards, saved lines and your sound history stay on your phone until you delete them.
- Clarity. Your takes are compared with the example sounds on your phone. Nothing is sent.
- Your name. Optional. If you add it, your name and how it sounds stay on your phone; change or remove it in Settings › Your name.
What is sent, and to whom
| What | When | To whom | Kept by us |
|---|---|---|---|
| The words of your turns in a live rehearsal (text, not audio), your name and how it sounds if you added one (so the partner says it right), the retakes you choose to compare, and your answers when the app helps you build a scene or find a starting point | Only after you agree to the AI partner (you can withdraw in Settings › Privacy) | Anthropic, PBC (US), which runs the Claude model as our processor, through our server on Amazon Web Services | No. Our server passes the words to Anthropic and keeps none of them; our logs never contain them |
| Lines read aloud by a natural voice (the partner's lines, and a line you ask the app to say for you) | When the voice is on | Amazon Web Services (Amazon Polly), our hosting and voice provider, in the US | No (a short-lived cache of the partner's fixed lines only) |
| A reported partner line | Only when you tap Report and Send; you see exactly what is sent | Us (AWS) | 30 days, for review |
| A random install ID, App Attest check, your plan (Free or Pro), and counters (rehearsals this week, cost this month, a scene's settings as references such as the scenario id and style, never words) | When the app talks to our server | Us (AWS) | A rehearsal's counters 30 days; weekly counters 21 days; daily counters 2 days; the install record until you delete it |
| A starting-point check (daily path) | When you choose to send your spoken answer | Anthropic (as above) | For 24 hours, a keyed hash of the request and the result as numbers (no words), so a retry gets the same answer |
| App analytics (which screens and buttons are used, with no words, names or dates) | In the background, only while "Share anonymous usage" is on (Settings › Privacy). It starts off in the UK, the EEA and Switzerland until you turn it on, and on elsewhere; turning it off deletes what is waiting to be sent | Us (AWS) | 13 months |
| Performance and error diagnostics (how long a reply took, failure codes; no words) | With app analytics, only while "Share anonymous usage" is on | Us (AWS) | 13 months |
| Purchases | When you buy Pro | Apple handles payment; we receive only a signed proof of your plan | Your plan only |
What Anthropic does with your words. Anthropic processes the words under its commercial terms for API customers, as our processor: to produce the reply, not to train its models. Anthropic may keep API inputs and outputs for a limited time, only for trust and safety, and then deletes them.
Where. Our servers are Amazon Web Services in the US (us-east-1). Anthropic processes in the US. If you live outside the US, your words are transferred to the US to make the reply under the standard contractual clauses in our providers' data processing terms (Anthropic and Amazon Web Services).
Why (legal bases)
- To provide the rehearsal you ask for (performance of our contract with you), after your explicit agreement to send your words to the AI partner (consent, which you can withdraw at any time).
- Counters, cost limits and abuse prevention: our legitimate interest in keeping the service fair and affordable.
- Analytics and diagnostics without content: your consent in the UK, the EEA and Switzerland ("Share anonymous usage" starts off there and is asked for in Settings and before your first live rehearsal); elsewhere, our legitimate interest in fixing and improving the app, which you can switch off at any time.
Your choices and rights
- Withdraw consent: Settings › Privacy › AI partner permission. Gentle scenes and Clarity keep working.
- Delete everything: Settings › Privacy › Delete my data deletes what is on your phone and everything we hold for your phone on our server, and asks our analytics to remove its events. One small counter (how many rehearsals this week, no other data) is kept until it expires (at most 21 days), so deleting can't reset a free week. Your Apple subscription isn't cancelled: manage it in your iPhone's Settings.
- Access, correction, portability, objection: your rehearsals are on your phone, where you can read, share or delete them. We hold no words, names or contact details; write to Robin for anything else.
- Complaints: you can complain to your local data protection authority, for example the OAIC in Australia, the ICO in the UK or the supervisory authority where you live in the EU.
Children
Hold the Floor is for people aged 13 and over. We never ask your birthday, and your name is optional. Where the law asks apps to check age (for example in some US states), your device may share an age range with the app through Apple (Declared Age Range). The app uses it on your phone only, to apply the 13+ limit: it is never kept and never sent to us, to Anthropic or to analytics. If your device says you're under 13, the app stops there and nothing is collected, stored or sent. Where the law asks a parent or guardian to approve a big change to the app (like this version's move from 4+ to 13+), the app asks them through Apple and waits for their yes; their answer stays on the phone too. Where the law asks adults to acknowledge such a change, Apple shows them what changed before they carry on.
Safety
If something you say suggests you may be in danger, the app stops the rehearsal and shows where to find help. Our server records only that the rehearsal ended this way (one yes or no, no words), to give back that rehearsal's count.
Changes
If we change who processes your words, the app asks you again before sending anything. Each version of this policy is dated at the top.
