Privacy Policy

Folio does not send your communication anywhere. Here is everything it keeps, where it keeps it, and what travels into a device backup.

Short version: Folio makes no network requests at all, apart from Apple’s own App Store purchase check. There is no Folio account, no advertising, no analytics SDK and no cross-app tracking, and no code that uploads your words to us or to a prediction provider. Drafts, phrases, spoken history, learned words, Conversation Mode transcripts, suggestions and your optional medical information all stay on the device.

What we collect through Folio

None. Folio’s App Store privacy label is “Data Not Collected”, and that is exactly what the app does. There is no developer analytics, no advertising, no account sign-in, no remote conversation prediction, and no developer-operated content upload service.

What stays on your device

Drafts. A draft is held in memory while you compose it. Folio does not add unfinished drafts to its saved phrase or history database.
Phrases, boards, shortcuts and spoken history. These live in Folio’s app container on your device.
Conversation Mode. When you tap Listen, Apple on-device speech recognition transcribes the person speaking with you. Folio does not upload audio or transcripts. The rolling transcript is held in memory and cleared when listening stops. If on-device recognition is unavailable, Folio leaves Listen off instead of falling back to server transcription.
Suggestions and learning. Phrase-library ranking, learned word patterns and supported Apple on-device model suggestions all run locally. Incognito pauses learning and history; Erase learned words deletes local learning.
Voices. Folio uses installed Apple speech voices and Personal Voice through iOS. Folio does not ship or stream voices of its own.
Preferences. Voice, appearance, access and privacy preferences are stored locally so the app works the way you set it up.

The optional medical card

Settings → Emergency → Medical information lets you or a carer type a name, a blood type, allergies, conditions and medication, and an emergency contact. Every field is optional and nothing is stored until you fill one in. Folio saves exactly the text you typed — it does not interpret, validate or derive anything medical from it. The card appears underneath the emergency phrases so that somebody helping you can read it, and Show large enlarges it. It is never spoken aloud, never used for suggestions or learning, and Folio never contacts anybody for you. None of it is sent to us or to anyone else. Emptying a field deletes it from the device.

Where that text actually lives, because it is health information. When the card is filled in, it exists in three places on the device:

Folio’s on-device preferences store (iOS UserDefaults), in ordinary app storage rather than a separately encrypted vault;
any backup you export yourself, as ordinary readable JSON; and
an automatic snapshot Folio writes inside its own app storage each time the app moves to the background, so that a database fault cannot lose your phrases.

Neither the snapshot nor the app container is excluded from an iPhone, iPad or iCloud backup, so the card travels into any device backup you make, exactly as the rest of your apps do. That copy is between you and Apple; we never receive it. If you would rather your medical information were not in a device backup, leave those fields empty.

Backups

Exported backups are files you create and control. Folio also keeps the one automatic snapshot described above. Both include your saved phrases, boards, shortcuts and — if you filled it in — your medical information, as ordinary readable JSON. We do not receive either file, so treat an exported backup as confidential.

Apple services and links you choose

App Store purchases. Apple processes Folio Pro and returns entitlement status through StoreKit. We do not receive your payment-card details.
Apple voices and speech recognition. These are operating-system features governed by your device settings and Apple’s terms.
Device and iCloud backups. Folio’s content lives in its own app container, so it is included in any backup you make, as described above.
External links. If you choose a website, App Store, email or support link, the destination app or service may process data under its own policy.
Support email. We receive only the information you decide to send. Please avoid private conversation text unless it is necessary to explain a problem.

Your controls

Incognito pauses local learning and local history.
Erase learned words removes Folio’s local learning data.
Clear medical information: empty any field in Settings → Emergency → Medical information and Folio removes it from the device. Leave every field empty and no card is stored or shown.
Delete individual content: phrases, boards, shortcuts and history can be removed in the app.
Export a backup creates a local file you control.
Delete app data: deleting Folio deletes its local app container. Export a backup first if you may want the content later.
Permissions: Microphone, Speech Recognition and Personal Voice access can be changed in iOS Settings.

Children and schools

Folio does not require an account and does not collect a child’s identity through the app. Communication content, medical information and suggestions stay on the device. A parent, guardian, school or the person using Folio controls device permissions, local content, and any backup file they export.

Security and changes

Folio relies on iOS app-container protections for local data. Because your medical information sits in ordinary app storage and appears in the backup files described above, please keep a passcode on the device. Folio’s Settings PIN protects editing the medical card, not reading it — a paramedic has to be able to read it without a code, and that is deliberate. No system can be promised perfectly secure. If Folio ever proposes materially different data collection or off-device processing, this policy and the App Store privacy disclosure will be updated before that behaviour ships.
