Prepay or bill pay: the two main choices
In Ireland, people often talk about two types of plan. Prepay means you add credit before you use the phone. You can usually top up in shops or online. Bill pay means you get a bill each month, and you often sign a contract for a set time. Many newcomers start with prepay because it can feel simpler. Bill pay may ask for more documents. Think about what fits your life, and ask the staff to explain each option slowly if you need.
Can you explain the difference between prepay and bill pay?
I'm new to Ireland. Which options do people usually choose?
Is there a contract with this plan, or can I stop any time?
What to bring and what they may ask
Staff may ask for some identification, and sometimes proof of address. What they ask for can be different from one shop to another, so it is a good idea to ask before you go. If you are buying a new phone with the plan, they may ask more questions. If you do not understand a word, it is fine to ask what it means. You can also ask them to write it down for you.
What documents do I need to bring?
I don't have proof of address yet. Is there another option?
Sorry, could you write that down for me, please?
Asking about data, calls and texts
Plans usually include some data, calls and texts. Think about how you use your phone. Do you watch videos? Do you call family in another country? Tell the staff what you need, and they can show you plans that might fit. Ask what happens if you use more than your plan includes. Also ask about calls abroad, because this is often different from local calls.
I use a lot of data for video calls. What do you suggest?
Can I call my home country with this plan?
What happens if I use all my data before the month ends?
Keeping your number and getting a SIM
If you already have an Irish number, you can often keep it when you change provider. People sometimes call this moving or porting your number. Ask the new provider how it works. You will get a SIM card, or sometimes an eSIM on newer phones. Ask the staff to help you put it in or set it up. Check that your phone works in Ireland before you leave the shop.
I'd like to keep my current number. How do I do that?
Does my phone work with an eSIM?
Could you help me set up the SIM before I go?
Checking the details before you agree
Before you say yes, check the important details. Ask how long the contract lasts and how to cancel. Ask when your payment happens each month. Ask if the price may change later. Take a copy of the agreement or ask them to email it. You do not need to decide today. It is okay to say you want to think about it and come back.
How long is the contract, and how do I cancel?
Can you email me a copy of the agreement?
Thank you. I'd like to think about it and come back later.
Common questions
Can I get a phone plan when I just arrived?
Many newcomers do. Prepay is often an easy way to start because it may need fewer documents. Ask in the shop what they need from you. If something is missing, ask if there is another way.
What if I don't understand the staff?
That is very normal. You can say, "Could you speak a bit more slowly, please?" or "Can you explain that in a simple way?" Staff are used to helping people from many countries.
What if I want to stop my plan later?
Ask about cancelling before you agree. Later, you can call or visit the provider. Say clearly that you want to cancel, and ask what the next steps are. Keep notes of what they tell you.
