Before you go back to the shop

Try to bring the item and your receipt. If you paid by card, bring the same card too. Some shops can find your purchase with it. Keep the box, tags and packaging if you still have them. Many shops have a returns policy. It is often printed on the receipt or shown near the till. Policies are different in every shop, so if you are not sure, just ask. It also helps to know what you want: a refund, an exchange, or a different size.

Hi, I bought this here last week.

Do you have a returns desk, or can I do it here?

I have the receipt with me.

02

Explaining the problem

Go to the till or the customer service desk. Say hello first, then explain the problem in one or two short sentences. You do not need a long story. Staff usually want three things: what you bought, when you bought it, and what is wrong. Be clear and friendly. If the item is broken or faulty, show them the problem. If you just changed your mind, say so honestly. That is okay to say.

It's the wrong size. Could I change it?

Unfortunately, it stopped working after two days.

I changed my mind about it. Is it possible to return it?

03

Asking for a refund, exchange or credit

Staff might offer different options. A refund means you get your money back, often to the same card. An exchange means you swap it for another item. A credit note or store credit means you can spend that value in the shop later. It is fine to say which one you prefer. If they offer something you do not want, you can ask politely if another option is possible. Listen carefully and ask them to repeat if needed.

Would it be possible to get a refund?

Could I swap it for a different colour instead?

Sorry, could you explain what a credit note is?

04

If you don't have the receipt

Losing a receipt happens to everyone. Do not worry too much. Explain the situation honestly. Sometimes staff can find the sale using your card or a digital receipt in your email. Sometimes they can only offer an exchange or store credit. It depends on the shop. Stay polite and ask what they can do. A calm, friendly question often works better than arguing.

I'm sorry, I lost the receipt. Is there anything you can do?

I paid by card. Could you find it that way?

I think the receipt was sent to my email. Can I show you on my phone?

05

If the answer is no

Sometimes the shop says no. Stay calm. You can ask why, so you understand. You can also politely ask to speak to a manager. Managers sometimes have more options. If you still do not agree, you can thank them and leave. Later you can look for general consumer information online. Remember, being polite and clear is always your best tool. Do not feel embarrassed. Asking is normal.

Could you tell me why it can't be returned?

Would it be possible to speak to a manager, please?

Okay, thanks for checking anyway.

Common questions

Is it rude to return something in Ireland?

No. Returning items is very common, and staff handle it every day. Just be polite and clear. A friendly 'Hi' and a short explanation is usually all you need.

What if I don't understand what the staff member says?

Ask them to repeat or speak more slowly. You can say, 'Sorry, could you say that again more slowly?' Most people are happy to help.

Do I need the original packaging?

It often helps, especially for electronics or clothes with tags. But every shop is different. If you do not have it, just ask what is possible.
