Know the basic choices
There are usually two main types. A pay-as-you-go plan means you add credit when you need it. A monthly plan, often called a contract or SIM-only plan, means you pay regularly. Some plans include a new phone and some are just a SIM card for the phone you already have. Before you go, think about how much data, calls and texts you use each day. This makes the conversation easier.
I'm looking for a SIM-only plan for my own phone.
Can you explain the difference between pay-as-you-go and monthly?
I use a lot of data but not many calls.
What to bring and what they may ask
Staff often ask for some details, such as your name, address and how you want to pay. For some plans they may ask for more information. What they need can be different in each shop, so it is a good idea to ask before you visit. If you don't understand a question, ask them to repeat it slowly. Staff are used to helping people who are new.
What do I need to bring to sign up?
Sorry, could you say that again more slowly?
I've just moved here. Is that okay for this plan?
Ask clear questions about the plan
Before you agree, make sure you understand the plan. Ask how long the plan lasts and what happens at the end. Ask if calls to your home country are included or cost extra. Ask what happens if you use more data than your plan allows. Write the answers down if it helps. Good questions protect you from surprises later.
How long does this plan last?
Are calls to other countries included?
What happens if I go over my data?
Take your time before you agree
Some staff may talk quickly or say an offer ends today. You do not have to decide straight away. It is normal to compare a few options and come back later. You can ask for the details in writing so you can read them at home. A calm, polite 'not yet' is completely fine.
I'd like to think about it first.
Can I have the details in writing, please?
Thank you, I'm going to compare a few options.
Setting up and getting help later
When you get your SIM, staff may help you put it in your phone. Check that calls, texts and data work before you leave. Save your new number somewhere safe. If something goes wrong later, you can usually contact customer service by phone, chat or in a shop. Keep your account details ready when you call.
Could you help me put the SIM in my phone?
Can we check that it works before I go?
My data isn't working. Can you help me?
Common questions
Can I keep my phone from my home country?
Often yes, but your phone may need to be 'unlocked' to work with a new SIM. You can ask staff, 'Will my phone work with your SIM?' They can usually check for you.
What if I don't understand the contract?
Ask questions until it is clear. You can say, 'Can you explain this part in simple words?' You can also take the details home and ask someone you trust to read them with you.
Can I change or cancel my plan later?
This depends on the plan. Ask about it before you sign up. A good question is, 'What happens if I want to change or cancel?'
