Before you go to the shop

Find your receipt first. It can be paper or an email on your phone. Many shops ask for it. Keep the item in good condition, and bring the box and tags if you still have them. Bring the card you used to pay, because some shops put the money back on the same card. Each shop has its own rules about returns, so it is a good idea to check the sign near the counter or ask staff. If you are not sure, you can always ask politely.

Hi, do you have a returns counter?

I have the receipt on my phone. Is that okay?

Can you tell me about your returns policy?

02

Explaining the problem

Go to the counter and say hello. Then say what you want and why, in one or two short sentences. You do not need a long story. Staff usually want to know three things: what the item is, what is wrong, and what you would like. Try to stay calm and friendly, even if you feel annoyed. A smile helps. If you don't understand a question, it is fine to ask them to repeat it or speak more slowly.

Hi, I'd like to return this, please.

It stopped working after two days.

Sorry, could you say that again more slowly?

03

Asking for an exchange

Sometimes you don't want your money back. You just want a different size, colour, or a new one that works. This is called an exchange. You can often find the new item yourself and bring it to the counter. Or you can ask staff to help you look. If they don't have it in stock, they may offer to order it or suggest something similar. You can say yes, no, or ask for time to think.

Could I swap this for a bigger size?

Do you have this in another colour?

Can I think about it for a minute?

04

If the shop offers store credit

Sometimes the shop offers store credit instead of money back. Store credit means you get a card or slip to spend in that shop later. This can be useful if you shop there often. If you would prefer your money back, you can ask politely. The staff may explain their rules. Listen, and ask questions if something is not clear. You can also ask to speak with a manager in a polite way if you still feel unsure.

Is it possible to get a refund instead?

How long can I use the store credit?

Could I please speak with a manager?

05

Finishing up

Before you leave, check what was agreed. Ask for a receipt for the return or exchange. This is your record. If the money is going back to your card, you can ask when you might see it. Thank the staff member, even if it took a long time. Being polite usually makes things easier for everyone. Keep your new receipt somewhere safe until you are sure everything is fine.

Can I get a receipt for this, please?

When will the money go back on my card?

Thanks so much for your help.

Common questions

What if I lost my receipt?

Tell the staff honestly. Some shops can find your purchase if you paid by card. Others may offer store credit or ask for other proof. Every shop is different, so just ask politely: "I lost my receipt. Is there anything I can do?"

Can I return something if I just changed my mind?

It depends on the shop. Some shops are happy to help, and some are not. Check the sign at the counter or ask: "Can I return this if I changed my mind?" Keep the item unused and bring the tags.

What if the staff member says no?

Stay calm. Ask them to explain why. You can ask if there is another option, like an exchange or store credit. You can also politely ask to speak with a manager. If you still need help, look for official consumer information in your state.
