Before You Go to the Shop

First, find your receipt. It can be paper or an email. Many shops ask for it. Keep the item clean and, if you can, in its box or bag with the tags on. Look at the receipt or the shop's website for its return policy. Some shops have a time limit, and some items cannot be returned. If you are not sure, you can call the shop and ask before you go.

Hi, I have a question about your return policy.

Can I return something without the box?

Do I need the receipt to make a return?

02

Finding the Right Place

Big shops often have a customer service desk near the entrance. In smaller shops, you usually go to the cash register. If you do not know where to go, ask any staff member. Bring the item, the receipt, and the card you paid with. Sometimes staff need to see the same card. You may need to wait in a line. That is normal.

Excuse me, where do I go for returns?

Is this the line for returns and exchanges?

I'd like to return this, please.

03

Explaining the Problem

Tell the staff member what you want and why. Keep it short and clear. You do not need to give a long story. Common reasons are: wrong size, wrong colour, it does not work, or you changed your mind. Staff may look at the item and the receipt. They may ask a few questions. Answer simply. If you do not understand, ask them to repeat.

I bought this last week, but it doesn't fit.

It stopped working after two days.

Sorry, could you say that again more slowly?

04

Refund, Exchange, or Store Credit

The shop may offer different options. A refund means you get your payment back, often on the same card. An exchange means you swap the item for another one, like a different size. Store credit means you get a card or slip to spend later in that shop. You can ask which options they have. Then choose the one that works best for you.

Can I exchange it for a bigger size?

Is a refund possible, or only store credit?

I'd prefer an exchange, if that's okay.

05

If the Answer Is No

Sometimes the shop says no. Maybe the time limit has passed, or the item is on final sale. Stay calm and polite. You can ask why, and you can ask if there is another option. You can also ask to speak to a manager. Speak kindly, because staff often follow rules they did not make. If they still say no, thank them and leave.

I understand. Is there anything else you can do?

Could I speak with a manager, please?

Thank you for checking. I appreciate it.

Common questions

What if I lost my receipt?

Ask anyway. Some shops can find your purchase with the card you used. Others may offer store credit or an exchange. Some will say no. It depends on the shop, so it is always okay to ask politely.

Can I return something I bought online at the store?

Sometimes, yes. Many shops allow this, but not all. Check the website or the order email first. If you are unsure, call the store and ask before you travel there.

Is it rude to return things?

No. Returns are very normal in Canada. Staff help with returns every day. Just be polite, bring your receipt, and explain the problem clearly.
