Know what you need first

Before you visit a store or call, think about how you use your phone. Do you use a lot of data for maps and video? Do you call other countries? Do you want a new phone or keep your own? Write down two or three things that matter most to you. This helps you stay calm and clear. Staff may talk fast or offer many extras. A short list helps you remember your main questions.

I mostly use my phone for maps, messages and video calls.

I want to keep the phone I already have.

I sometimes need to call family in another country.

02

Prepaid or monthly plan

Phone companies often offer two main types. With a prepaid plan, you usually pay before you use the service. With a monthly plan, you usually get a bill after each month. Some monthly plans ask for more information or a contract. Ask the staff to explain the difference in simple words. Ask what happens if you want to stop the plan later. Every company is different, so always check the details.

Can you explain the difference between prepaid and monthly?

Is there a contract with this plan?

What happens if I want to cancel later?

03

Ask about the full cost

The price on a sign may not be the full amount. There can be extra fees or taxes added. Ask the staff to show you the total you will pay each month. Ask if the price changes after some time. If you are getting a new phone, ask if you pay for it all at once or little by little. Ask for the information in writing so you can read it at home.

What is the total I will pay each month?

Are there any extra fees?

Can I have this information in writing, please?

04

Bringing your own phone

Many people want to use the phone they brought from home. Sometimes a phone only works with one company. This is often called a locked phone. Staff can check if your phone will work on their network. They may need some information from your phone settings. If it works, you usually just need a new SIM card or eSIM. Ask them to help you set it up before you leave.

Will my phone work on your network?

Is my phone locked or unlocked?

Can you help me set up the SIM card before I go?

05

Taking time and saying no

Staff may offer extra things like insurance, more data or new accessories. You do not have to say yes. It is normal to say you want to think about it. You can also compare other companies first. If something is not clear, ask them to say it again slowly. Polite but firm words work well. You are the customer, and your questions are welcome.

Thank you, but I don't need that.

I'd like to think about it and come back later.

Could you say that again more slowly, please?

Common questions

What should I bring to the store?

Many people bring a photo ID and their phone, if they want to keep it. The company may ask for other information. You can call or check their website first and ask, "What do I need to bring to start a plan?"

Can I keep my phone number from another company?

Often you can move your number to a new company. Staff usually need some details from your old account. Ask them, "Can I keep my current number?" Do not cancel your old plan until they tell you the number has moved.

What if I don't understand the staff?

This is very common, even for people born here. Ask them to slow down or write it down. You can say, "English is my second language. Can you use simple words, please?" Most staff are happy to help.
